Frequently I'm asked to estimate the value of a car, either by
someone wanting to sell their car or a buyer interested in a
particular car they have seen. The seller usually is concerned
they might undervalue their car and the buyer is usually concerned
that the owner is expecting too much on sentimental grounds.
I usually base my estimates on information from "The Red Book"
website which lists current market values for all cars sold in
Australia and is updated on a monthly basis. www.redbook.com.au
Note that low mileage original cars and fully restored cars are
worth more, but are only what someone will pay for
them. Just because a model is rare does not automatically
make it more valuable - often the reverse because enthusiasts of
them are even rarer! |
As a rough guide the following values can be expected.
| Model |
Market Value |
| Morris 1100 |
$ 700 - $1,500 |
| Morris 1300/1500/Nomad |
$ 600 - $1,400 |
| Morris Major |
$ 900 - $2,100 |
| Morris Minor 1000 |
$1,300 - $2,900 |
| Morris Mini K 1100 |
$1,000 - $2,200 |
| Morris Marina |
$ 600 - $1,400 |
| Austin 1800 |
$ 800 - $1,700 |
| Austin Kimberley X6 |
$ 700 - $1,900 |
Another reason for differing
demand/popularity is the availability of parts. In Australia, Morris 1100s and Austin 1800s
share engines (and therefore many mechanical parts and expertise) with the Mini and
the MGB respectively, where as Marinas and the 1500/Nomad
have no counterpart with a cult following to provide demand for
E-series engine parts.
A case in point:
A few years ago a Morris Nomad was advertised at a
Sydney used car dealership for just under $4,000. The salesman justified the
price on the basis of it being a "collector's item".
As the months ticked by the price dropped to $2,999...$1,999... $999 and it was eventually bought by an enthusiast (after 6 months) for $600. A number of people commented to me that they had inspected the car during this time but each concluded it was only worth about $1,500 and so they didn't buy it. |
